Link - Malta

Link - Malta

Shortly before the Supreme court's Hobby Lobby decision, a friend asked me, “If the United States gives up on religious freedom, where do we go?” I answered jokingly, “I don't know, Malta.”
I say jokingly because I can't imagine moving my family from Southern California to a Mediterranean island nation. Texas, perhaps, but Malta? However, it's true that in many ways, Malta is the world's last true christian holdout. The article at the link below is a great feature on the tiny country, and how it needs prayer to hold strong, since it is a target for the culture of death.

Link - The War on Men

Link - The War on Men

The article at the following link has gotten a lot of attention lately, but with Fathers' Day just behind us, it is worth considering.  If manhood is under attack, not only will our children suffer from a lack of mental and emotional development, but spiritual as well.  It is our duty as fathers to introduce our children to their true Father in Heaven.

Religious Liberty Loses Again

A baker in Colorado is being forced to set aside his religious beliefs and participate in same-sex “weddings.”  His solution is the one we all must be prepared to adopt – peaceful civil disobedience.

Bishops Urge Caution Regarding Girl Scouts

There have been concerns in Christian circles regarding the Girl Scouts for years (and more recently, the Boy Scouts, as well).  The bishops have recently released a statement urging caution.  While the bishops showed great charity with their statement, they also showed great prudence.

Link - Scrupulosity, OCD, and Spirituality

Link – Scrupulosity, OCD, and Spirituality

One rarely discussed difficulty that many Catholics can experience is scrupulosity, an obsessive fear that they have committed some terrible sin, often when no sin at all is really present.  Numerous Saints have struggled with it at times, and it was probably the major impetus behind Martin Luther’s development of the mistaken doctrine of Sola Fide and eventual leaving the Church.

Scrupulosity has more to do with one’s mental state than spiritual state.  At the link below, Benjamin Mann gives an insightful reflection, based on his own experiences, on scrupulosity, obsessive compulsive disorder, and the spiritual life.

Link - Grieving the Loss of a Child

Link – Grieving the Loss of a Child

Losing a child during pregnancy is a pain that many people have to suffer, and is often misunderstood.  The following link is a beautiful, heartfelt reflection by Christine Ostendorf on this experience.  Her thoughts encourage us to consider the term, “miscarriage,” as if the mother had somehow carried her baby wrongly.  As Ostendorf quotes Kimberly Hahn: “If the goal of Christian parenting is getting your children to heaven, then we have already succeeded with this child.”

“I had not miscarried my baby,” says Ostendorf, “I carried her with love and strength to the place we all aim for, heaven.”

Also in the article’s comments is the pastoral wisdom of a priest, who says, "A baby is a baby no matter how small. Some are born so that we may care for them, and some go straight to heaven to intercede for us;" as well as a link to the Shrine of the Holy Innocents, where parents can enroll their children whom they’ve lost.

Happy Columbus Day!

Happy Columbus Day!

Yesterday was Columbus Day.  For over 500 years, people have been celebrating Christopher Columbus’s historic journey.  In the United States and elsewhere, he has long been considered a hero.  But recently, Columbus has fallen out of favor with some people.  In the following article, Stephen Beale does a great job of cutting through the propaganda and giving Columbus a balanced historical look.  Happy Columbus Day!

Link – The Continuing Fukushima Disaster

This article may not seem a perfect fit for a Catholic blog, but exposing dangerous disinformation is important.  Those paying attention recently have learned that we have been grossly misinformed about the fallout from the Fukushima nuclear disaster.  The following article explores some of the long-term ramifications stemming from the recent bad news.

Link - Anti-Woman Conference

Link - Anti-Woman Conference
Women Deliver, a global conference on women’s health, was held this week in Kuala Lumpur.  “Global conference on women’s health” should make us skeptical to begin with, and when we see featured speakers like Melinda Gates and Frances Kissling, we can be sure the event will be garbage.
Sure enough, attendees were treated to the propaganda that “reproductive rights (i.e. free contraception and universal abortion)” is the central issue to women’s health.  Nevermind that both of these things are carcinogenic, not to mention the other direct threats they pose to women’s physical, emotional and spiritual health.  And nevermind that millions of women die each year from malnutrition, preventable disease and polluted water supplies.
Those things are of little consequence when the Left is on a mission.  Considering the interest first-world organizations have in curbing the growth of third-world populations, one has to wonder if eugenics is a driving force of this mission.  But we need not question the sincerity of the individual speakers at the Women Deliver conference.  Sincere or not, they are peddling death.  The article at the link below gives a wonderful summary of this under-reported travesty.

Link - Tide Turning Against Common Core

Link – Tide Turning Against Common Core

I’ve written a couple of times on this blog about the Common Core national education standards.  As a teacher, they were presented to me as a wonderful thing.  However, the more I learned, the more I began to get concerned.  Now, enthusiasm is waning for the standards.  Indiana is the first state to reject the standards after previously accepting them, and it may not be the last.  See the link below for more details.
